It's another hot and sunny day today. Well, it is not all that hot, but hot for me and hot for the animals. When I finally managed to get down to the Park all I could see were sleeping foxes. Devon and Ember were nice enough to wake up for me and pose briefly.

Gale is going to take over now, maybe even add something to today's page. Yea Gale!

Gale here. Monty's gone and I have the controls.

Today was a good day for spiders and snake. The spiders were all found here at Wolf Park and are actually fairly common. The snake is one that I haven't seen in years! Hog noses are very dramatic if they feel threatened. First line of defence is pooping on the offending annoyance (that was me). The second line of defence is to puff up, flatten out the head and neck and hiss and generally try to look as big and tough as possible. They may even strike at you, of course since this is all acting, they never open their mouth when they strike. If all else fails, they go into the "Great Death Scene". The snake goes into convulsions, mouth hangs open, tongue out and finally rolls over onto his/her back. Bravo! Bravo! One dead snake. Of course if you happen to flip the dead snake back right side down, he/she will promptly roll back over sunny side up. After all the proper position for a dead snake is over on their back.

Please Note:

For Photo of the Day Subscribers, especially those subscribed to the Archives: When you click on a little photo, and put in your password and user name to get to the big photo, just click the back link at the top of the big photo. You will then be taken back to the main page, but with a difference. Now you will have date links at the top of the page right below all the ad stuff. All the previous photo of the day pages will then be available to you. Well, there are still some holes from times Monty was away on trips, but those will eventually be filled as best he can.

Due to a number of people who were stealing bandwidth, and the possibility of just grabbing the images off the site without paying for a subscription, software has been installed which scrambles the URL. Unfortunately, the net effect is a fixed image file name when you right mouse click and choose 'save picture as'. The image number is in the URL and so all you have to do is change the file name when saving the image -- simple cut and past would suffice here. I know this is more difficult than before, but to my knowledge (the software was developed third party) it is an unavoidable part of the security we had to instal. Considering that I have to type all the image data AND the image file name in manually for each and every photograph, you still have it easy. When using Microsofts Internet Explorer, the big images want to save as BMP's. If you find this annoying, try using the free Firefox browser. Firefox allows you to save the images as JPGs.

Please do not call the Wolf Park office with questions about the Photo of the Day page. Questions should only go to support@wolfpark.net

      Thanks!

About Picture of the Day

Established January 23, 2002, this page is dedicated to the goings on at Wolf Park and occassionally elsewhere when Monty travels about the country and abroad. This page is a response to all the calls, e-mails, letters, faxes, mysterious notes pushed under doors in the middle of the night... about when Wolf Park is going to get a webcam. Well, we are working on it, and have been working on it for many years now, so don't hold your breath. We are kind of out in the boonies and getting something like that is either going to take a very generous donation (which we would much rather use on the animals than some old webcam where you may, or may not, actually see anything...

So, when Monty went 'digital' in late 2001, he realized that it would be a simple matter to just post a nice photo of a wolf, or something, on the website every day or so. OK, so it took a few months to come to this realization, but when it did, this page was born.

There are just a few rules with this page. The photos MUST be ones taken on that one day. Actually, that is about the only rule. The photo may, or may not be posed until later in the wee hours of the night after midnight and so what you see here is usually going to be photos taken the day before. In fact, we generally try to post the photos late in the evening so that there will be at least some semblance of consistency to when you are most likely to not miss anything.

As for the content, well, the photos might be of a wolf, or two, but they may not. For that matter, the photo may, or may not be taken at Wolf Park. At times, the photos may not be even taken anywhere near Wolf Park when Monty goes on vacation to some distant land (which he does often does do...) So, in such cases, the actual time the photo was taken can vary depending on the time zone the photo is taken in, but it will be a photo taken on THAT DAY in that time zone....

It is also important to note that despite the fact that the pictures posted here have to be taken on that one day, they are sometimes posted really late at night, or even early the next morning, so you might see old photos still up if you are a night owl. Just keep on checking, for eventually you will see current photos of the day.

So, when is the best time to check this page? You are pretty much safe if you check it in the morning through early afternoon PST (Indiana Standard Time). Although the page is usually updated for the day late at night, it sometimes might be updated in the early evening, which could be early afternoon on the West Coast.
